Code Enforcement

Mobile Storage Container Permit:

An ordinance regulating the placement, size, and length of time allowed for a mobile storage container has been adopted.  Code Enforcement is in charge in enforcing these rules.  Additionally, as part of the approved ordinance, all mobile storage containers will now require temporary use permits.  A fee of $30.00 will be charged per temporary use permit.   Please be advised, the penalty for violating the regulations for mobile storage containers will be a minimum of $25.00 per day.

Lawn Sprinkling Regulations:

Days of Watering Permitted:
Lawn watering and sprinkling with Village water is permitted all year long on Mondays through Fridays only.  However, between May 15th and September 15th of each year, watering and sprinkling of lawns shall be permitted for properties with odd numbered addresses on odd numbered calendar days, and at properties with even numbered addresses on even numbered calendar days.

Hours of Watering:
Watering of lawns with water supplied by the Village water system is permitted between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. only, irrespective of the time of year.

Sump Pump Discharge:

In an effort to prevent an unsafe condition in our roadways, we recommend that discharge from sump pump lines be directed to the rear or side yard and be discontinued a minimum of ten feet behind the sidewalk to allow this water to soak into the ground. Residents should never discharge their sump water into the sanitary sewer system as this additional water may cause residential sewage backups, which in turn impacts the sewage treatment plant's ability to treat domestic sewage, resulting in the need to increase the plant size, and ultimately, sewer usage rates. Weed Cutting:

Village ordinance requires that no owner of any property within the Village allow any weeds, grass, etc. to grow to a height in excess of eight inches. Anyone allowing this situation to occur will be notified to have the weeds or grass cut within a ten day period. Following such notification, if no action has occurred, the Village will contract for this service and will place a lien against the property for compensation for such service. Garage Sales:

Village residents are allowed up to two garage sales per year. "Any owner or occupant of a dwelling unit may conduct not more than a total of two garage sales, also known as patio sales, basement sales, yard sales, rummage sales, lawn sales driveway sales, etc., during any 12 consecutive months." These sales shall not extend more than three days and shall be limited to household goods and furnishings. No merchandise purchased for intentional sale or resale may be sold at a garage sale.

Garage Sale Sign Regulations:
  • No more than three signs may be erected.
  • No sign shall exceed 24" x 36" in size.
  • No sign shall be placed on private property without the permission of the property owner.
  • No sign shall be placed closer than 15 feet from the edge of the pavement or in areas where sidewalks are existing. Signs shall be placed no closer than 2 feet to the private property side of the edge of the sidewalk.
  • No sign shall be allowed to remain up for longer than four days.

Boats, Trailers, and Recreational Vehicles

(revised ordinance)The Village Board recently passed a new ordinance regarding parking and storing boats, trailers, recreational vehicles and accessories. The ordinance allows residents to park or store one motor home, travel trailer, camping trailer, recreational vehicle, boat, personal water craft, or all-terrain vehicle, including the trailer used to transport the vehicle. The vehicle may be parked or stored, but not lived in, on a lot in the residential district from April 1st to October 31st. We do require that the vehicle be parked on a hard surface driveway. (Hard surface means a driveway constructed of asphalt, pavers, or other similar materials resulting in a dust free surface.) Also, the vehicle may not extend or encroach into the right-of-way or over the public sidewalk, nor may the vehicle be parked or stored on the street.

From November 1st to March 31st, these types of vehicles may be parked or stored in a side or rear yard, only, and must be parked on a hard surface driveway. When parked or stored in a side yard, the vehicle shall be located to the rear of the front wall of the home. The vehicle must be screened from public view. Adequate screening shall consist of a fence with a maximum height of six feet. Finally, on corner lots, the front yards are considered to be both yards facing a public street.

Real Estate Signs

One real estate sign, not to exceed 32 square feet in area, is permitted per lot and must be displayed on private property only. Any temporary signs placed on public property, including the parkway and utility poles, will be confiscated by the Village Code Enforcement authorities. Political Signs

During political election campaigns, candidates and political supporters usually post temporary signs supporting their political positions. For aesthetic and safety concerns, the Village of New Lenox regulates temporary political signage so as to control the size and location of these temporary signs. The total area for a temporary political sign must not exceed sixteen square feet. These signs must be placed no closer than fifteen feet from the edge of pavement in areas where no sidewalk exists, and no closer than two feet from the private property side of the edge of the sidewalk in areas where sidewalks have been installed. No political signs shall be posted within any public right-of-way or upon trees or utility poles. Any signs posted illegally are subject to being confiscated by our Code Enforcement authorities.
